Review:
This is a cleanser we have recommended for years, but no more. In many ways the formula has become dated and is now a poor representation of the best of the best when it comes to facial cleansers. Part of what led us to this reconsideration (well, beyond the wealth of beautifully formulated water-soluble cleansers) is the amount of sodium lauryl sulfate in this so-called “gentle” cleanser. Although the amount is likely 1% or less of the product’s contents, there are many other cleansers available that don’t use this potentially problematic ingredient and that are far better for skin.

There is little reason to consider this over dozens of other options plus this cleanser is not adept at removing makeup.

Here is the Allure Best of Beauty Review for Hall of Fame Winner – Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser:

Like the scads of dermatologists who recommend it, Cetaphil abides by the spirit of the Hippocratic Oath: First, do no harm. “This is one cleanser that virtually everyone—even those with sensitive skin, rosacea, acne, and eczema—can use without worry of irritation,” says David Bank, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. A San Antonio–based pharmacist named Louis W. Schleuse first mixed up the soap- and fragrance-free formula in 1947. Initially, it was sold only by select pharmacists, but by the ’60s, Cetaphil had won a healthy fan base of dermatologists and pediatricians—and their problem-skin patients. Demand grew, and supply followed: By 1980, every major drugstore in America stocked the cleanser. With only eight ingredients, “it takes a less-is-more approach,” says Wilson. “Most importantly, it contains fatty alcohols, which coat the skin to prevent the detergents from drying it out.” Just what the doctor ordered.

WHAT IT IS:
A mild face wash

WHAT IT DOES:
Dissolves dirt, makeup, and oil without stripping skin

KEY INGREDIENTS:
Sodium lauryl sulfate (cleanses); propylene glycol (softens and cleanses)

HOW IT FEELS/SMELLS/LOOKS:
The lotion-like cleanser is fragrance-free.

WHY WE LIKE IT:
There’s a reason it has won Best of Beauty and Readers’ Choice awards, as well as dermatologists’ praise: It’s incredibly gentle, works for all skin types (except superoily), and leaves the face feeling clean and soft—not stripped, irritated, or greasy. You can rinse or tissue it off. (One note: This cleanser isn’t strong enough to remove eye shadow or mascara.)

AWARDS:
Best of Beauty 2007, 2006, 2004, 2003, and 2002; Best of Beauty Hall of Fame 2011; Readers’ Choice 2007
