In Greek Mythology, Persephone is the daughter of Demeter (Goddess of the
Earth) and Zeus (the Almighty God). Being a daughter of Nature, she loved planting seeds and nurturing plants. One day, as she was innocently picking flowers with some nymphs: Athena and Artemis in a field, Hades (God
of the Underworld) saw the beautiful woman and wanted her for his bride.
He abducted her by bursting through a cleft in the earth. Devastated Demeter,
goddess of the Earth, searched everywhere for her lost daughter. Hades
eventually was forced to return Persephone. However, it was a rule of the
Fates that whomever consumed food or drink in the Underworld was doomed
to spend eternity there. Before Persephone was released, Hades tricked her
into eating 6 pomegranate seeds, which forced her to return to the underworld
for 6 months out of the year. When Demeter and her daughter were united,
the Earth flourished with vegetation and color, but for some months each
year, when Persephone returned to the underworld, the earth once again became
a barren realm, explaining the seasons.
